What Is A Behavioral Assessment?

We created A Cognitive Connection to help the individuals of Colorado Springs learn how to improve their mental health, cognitive abilities, and brain functions. Our behavioral center offers various programs, events, and classes to help you and your loved ones better understand their brains and how to integrate brain exercises into everyday routines. As a full-service behavioral center, we offer behavioral assessments. Behavioral assessments help our cognitive experts gain a better understanding of how your brain operates, and what therapies and learning techniques would yield the best outcomes for you.

Behavioral assessments have been used in the field of psychology to help professionals observe, analyze, describe, and sometimes correct an individual’s behaviors. Behavioral assessments are even sometimes used in a professional setting to help hiring committees pick which people to add to their teams.

Types Of Behavioral Assessments

Understanding the reasons behind one’s behaviors is a complex process. To get the most answers possible, a professional will use a variety of tools to observe and analyze you, including behavioral assessments. Depending on your unique situation, your behavioral therapist will choose a behavioral assessment method that will help them understand you the best. Below is a list of some of the most common types of behavioral assessments.

  1. Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale
    • This diagnostic tool is most often used to measure the mental capabilities of children and young adults. Sometimes, this tool is used in addition to other tests to determine if an individual has a mental disorder, such as autism. It’s a great tool to use to compare your child’s behaviors to children of his or her same age. In order to complete the assessment, someone close to the individual fills out a questionnaire about the person’s capabilities with communication, motor skills, socialization, and daily living tasks.
  2. Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist
    • This assessment tool is used to measure a child’s emotional, behavioral, and social abilities. This test is extremely helpful when it comes to determining if a child has behavioral or emotional problems, such as ADHD, severe phobias, and social anxiety. For this questionnaire, parents and teachers answer a list of statements and decide if each statement accurately describes the child or not. The score of the questionnaire helps professionals understand if the child may have certain behavioral or emotional disorders.
  3. Analogue Assessment
    • An analogue assessment means observing one’s behavior in a controlled environment. One way a professional might use this tool would be to purposefully place you in a room with something you deeply fear to observe your actions. By observing and analyzing you, the professional is able to create a unique treatment plan that is catered to your individualized needs.
